Don’t forget about the event center

Football’s not the only thing rallying support for Farmers Field. The new event center is generating just as much buzz and excitement as the prospect of NFL football on Sunday afternoons in downtown L.A.
Grant Mitchell, Business Manager of the Painters & Allied Trades, District Council 36, says his council supports Farmers Field because it not only provides work for its four construction trades, it also provides permanent work for its tradeshow division (Local Union 831) because of the expansion of the convention center.
Tradeshow Local 831 represents over 2000 trade show installers, exhibit builders, and sign industry workers. All of our members will benefit tremendously from the conventions and events that Los Angeles would be able to host by renovating Pico Hall and expanding the L.A. Convention Center. We’re proud to support and endorse the building of Farmers Field.
We’re honored to have the support of Tradeshow Local 831, and we look forward to working with them.
And Grant is right, remodeling Pico Hall and expanding the L.A. Convention Center is going to help Los Angeles in myriad ways.
The current LACC is only 15th in the nation in convention size. With no significant overhaul since 1993, it is too small and outdated to attract the biggest and most well known conventions in the country.
The new event center, one of the staples of the Farmers Field project, will change all of that.
The renovations will create a total of 1.7 million gross square feet, making it one of the five largest convention centers in the United States. The operations of the Event Center alone would generate $378 million from an estimated 80 annual event days each year. The project is expected to stimulate the development of four to five new hotels.
Building the state-of-the-art stadium, and expanding the L.A. Convention Center just makes sense. It means more jobs, more business, and more revenue for Angelenos.
